The Auto Transportation Market and What it Means to You

The auto transportation industry has been around since the mid 1940’s and early 1950’s. It was common to see vehicles being transported on the railroads. In 1950, Volkswagen Engineers worked with German railroads to design a railroad car that could haul 10 vehicles on one car. Volkswagen’s two-level flatcar design effectively became the first autorack, entering service circa 1954.

Since the 1950’s technology has come a long way, we’ve found ourselves with better transportation options, faster shipping times, and we’re even able to ship more vehicles at once. The automobile shipping industry has taken more market share than first imagined.

In 2013 the auto transportation market share was only $813 million. With vehicle transport becoming more and more popular, the recent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is 2.7%, creating a potential for the market to increase to $1.06 billion by 2029, according to The Ritz Harold.

What does this mean for you? Car shipping isn’t going anywhere. More consumers are opting to use this route when relocating versus driving their vehicle. Vehicle shipping experts know how to get the job done without issues, and can do it for the right price. The vehicle transportation industry is full of professionals, like MotorCarTrans, that can help you move your car across the state, or even the country.

Carriers vs. Brokers. What Option Works Best for You?

You need to ship your vehicle, first step, you take to the internet and conduct your web search, but you notice something, your results include both carriers and brokers, what’s the difference? Both state the same thing, they can ship your car when you need and also deliver it on the day you select. How do you know which option will best suit your needs?

Let’s start off with the differences between the two. Carriers operate their own fleet of trucks, while brokers work with carriers to coordinate shipments using a vast network of carriers.

Carriers operate and move the shipments using their own trucks. Most carriers will operate within a few regions, and typically do not service the entire U.S.

Brokers work with their vast network of carriers, which range in size, so they are able to serve the entire county. There are also some brokers that own their own vehicles, making them known as broker-carriers.

The two do share some similarities as well. The obvious being they all work directly with you to coordinate the shipment of your vehicle. Both will be with you every step of the way from pick-up to delivery making sure every aspect of the shipment stays on track and you are well informed during the process.

There are always pros and cons to both sides and also benefits that you can get from one that you can’t get from the other. Just a few examples include:

Brokers tend to be more flexible, they are not tied to a single schedule and have more options when it comes to meeting your shipment needs since they have a large network of carriers.
Brokers only work with carriers that are properly licensed, insured and accredited. It’s hard to verify that information when you pick a carrier on your own.

– If you choose to book with a carrier, it will be that carrier you choose that will be handling your shipment. The route they select will be the fastest and most cost-effective route for you.
– When using a carrier you may get a lower price, meaning you’re not paying for a middleman.

The most important part of choosing your shipping partner, is making sure you do your research no matter what option you choose. Just because you get a quote back and it’s cheaper than the others, doesn’t always mean that’s the best option.

At MotorCarTrans, we’re here to help you every step of the way, no matter what option you choose. To get your free, no obligation quote, click here.

Tips to prepare you for your first car shipment

First up, you need to know the difference between the vehicle carriers and brokers. They both have a part in the vehicle shipping process. If you decide to work directly with the carrier, then, you are dealing with the company that has their transport trucks and they do not depend on anyone else to transport the vehicles. If you are working with a broker, you will need to be versatile as the broker depends carriers to ship their orders.

When you decide to ship your vehicle for the first time, the process can seem a bit confusing and even daunting in some cases. Most companies understand this and will try to help you along the way. Here at MotorCarTrans, we want to be as transparent as possible so you know how the process woks, so when you begin the process, there are no surprises.

Next, you need to fully understand what the “pick-up window” actually entails. When shipping your vehicle, the “pick-up window” refers to when the vehicle will be available for shipping. For example, if you pick October 23rd as your first available pick-up date, we then look for a transport truck that can pick up your vehicle by that date. Please note, it may take a couple of days to find a carrier to take your vehicle where it needs to go. That period of time is called the “pick-up window.”

Another thing that you may not be aware of, is that the location plays an important role in your vehicles transportation. When transporting to a big city, you’re going to have an easier time finding carriers versus transporting to a smaller rural town. It’s better to prepare early to avoid an issues, delays or confusion.

Scheduling exact dates and times isn’t always a guarantee when transporting your vehicle. Things to take in to consideration are weather, traffic and other transport loads. These items can significantly impact your shipment. Unless you are shipping in an enclosed trailer, (see Open Transport vs. Enclosed Transport), your vehicle will be shipped on a trailer with other vehicles and those cars will need to be picked up and dropped off as well, traffic and loading issues can delay your shipment.

To experience a stress-free shipment, try to always remain flexible. This doesn’t mean you should be prepared to wait 2+ weeks for your vehicle to be shipped but, you should be flexible when it comes to the shipment of your vehicle. Contacting the shipment company as early as you can to get on their schedule is the best option. Give yourself and the company enough time to be prepared.

Debunking Common Myths in the Car Shipping Industry

Myth 1: Vehicle shippers provide inaccurate quotes on purpose.
Yes, some untrustworthy companies give a very low quote, knowing you will naturally select the lowest quote available. However, with an honest shipping company like MotorCar Trans, that’s not the case at all. Here you will ALWAYS get the best shipping quote that’s 100% based on your requirements.

Myth 2: With open car carriers, your car will get damaged.
Open car carriers have become the “standard” way of shipping cars. It has been deemed the most effective way to transport your vehicle, as they can transport up to 10 vehicles at one time, which in turn, is more cost effective for you. Open transport may not have sides or a roof, but, the racks and beams still offer an abundance of protection from any debris your car may come in contact with. Nevertheless, if you decide the best option for your vehicle is enclosed transportation, we have that option available to you as well.

Myth 3: You should select the lowest auto transport quote.
As previously mentioned in myth 1, the lowest quote you receive, isn’t always the best. As Kurt Vonnegut said “You get what you pay for.” Safety and service must be top priority when shipping your vehicle. Just because they come in at the lowest price, doesn’t mean their level of service is going to be award winning. Save yourself the headache in the long-run and take time to research each shipping company, read their past customer reviews and look up their accreditations. We promise it will be worth it.

Myth 4: It’s cheaper to drive versus ship your car.
This myth all depends on where your final destination is located. First, you need to ask yourself a few questions: how far am I going? Am I thinking about the gas, the tolls, (if any), what about meals? Snacks for the road? How about time away from work? Will I need a hotel? Let’s not forget the time away from work and wear and tear on my car, not to mention the time stuck in traffic and potential weather hazards. All of these things must be factored in when considering driving versus shipping your vehicle. When you ship your vehicle, the drivers are accustomed and trained for these situations. The time, meals, breaks, etc., are all factored into your quote. There are no surprises.

Considering all of the factors at play for driving your car, it’s worth getting a free, no obligation quote.

Open Transport vs. Enclosed Transport

When transporting your vehicle, you have many options, one of those options is open versus enclosed transportation. But what do those mean exactly?

Open transportation is the industry “standard” for most car shipping. It has been deemed the most effective way to transport your vehicle, as they can transport up to 10 vehicles at one time, which in turn is more cost effective for you.

The drawback with open transport trucks is, they cannot pick up individual cars from residential, or many commercial, locations. Typically, a single car hauler will pick up individual cars and bring them to a terminal where they will be loaded onto a trailer for long distance transport.

To reduce your cost of shipping, you may also arrange to deliver your vehicle to the terminal where it will be loaded onto a trailer. You can also pick up your vehicle from the destination terminal instead of having it delivered to your location.

Enclosed transportation trailers look similar to the more common container trailer that is prevalent on the roads and highways in the USA. Enclosed transportation is safer for your vehicle as it is protected from the road elements, not exposed to the sun, or any other elements that may cause damage to the paint or vehicle itself.

While enclosed transportation sounds like the way to go, the main disadvantage of using an enclosed trailer is that it is more expensive. Enclosed trailers are more commonly used for the transport of classic and expensive vehicles, or for transport during winter months where vehicles may be exposed to harsh elements.

How to get the “best” price when shipping your vehicle

There are multiple factors at play when it comes to getting the “best” price when shipping your vehicle. For example, when are you planning on shipping it? Where to? And what kind of vehicle are you shipping? But some easy ways to minimize cost, are simple to address.

First off, get multiple quotes. Don’t just settle on one company. Compare rates from 5-6 companies. If they are all in the same ballpark then you know the price is going to be, on average, the same no matter who you use.

Next up, choose open carriers versus enclosed carriers. Enclosed carriers are more expensive and are more commonly used to transport classic and expensive vehicles during the winter months when they may be exposed to harsher elements.

Move your car in the off-season. If you plan to ship your car from a major city in the summer, expect to pay more. Many transport companies charge more during the hottest months when vehicles are being picked up or delivered to city centers. As you may have experienced this yourself, roads between major destinations are more congested with travelers, during these months, which leads to vehicle transport carriers on the road longer, using more fuel.
While the winter months tend to be the slower season, make sure you do your homework on, which carriers have drivers and routes available if you plan to ship your car to any of the northern states. Doing this will avoid any delayed shipments and longer ship times.

Make sure your vehicle runs. Shipping a non-running vehicle can be difficult and not every vehicle transport company will transport your car. The transport company will require special equipment and it is crucial the company knows this information upfront. Any mechanical issues, repairs, or if the car cannot be driven safely is considered a non-running vehicle. The cost of shipping a non-running vehicle is dramatically more expensive than if you were shipping a vehicle that runs, this is due to the equipment needed during the process of loading the vehicle. If the repairs are minor, we suggest getting the repairs done prior to shipping the vehicle.

Once this step is completed make sure the driver has signed the BOL and given you a copy. In the rare occurrence of any issues or damages, the insurance provided by the vehicle transportation company should cover any repairs your vehicle may need.

Motor Car Trans Presents: Your “How-To” Guide For Car Shipping.

Car shipping can be a hassle. But here at Motor Car Trans, we’ve compiled a simple “how-to” guide to make shipping your car a breeze!

Today we are reviewing the second step on car shipping, how to get your car ready for shipment.

This part of car shipping is easy. Simple maintenance, cleaning and documentation and you’re all set!

-Make sure your tires are inflated properly and check under the hood, for any possible leaks. This may cause the driver to refuse to pick up the car. Once that has been completed, take pictures of your vehicle, inside and outside, notating any existing damage. In the unlikely event of an accident, having pictures of your vehicle makes the insurance claim process much easier.

– Don’t fill up the gas tank. Leaving on average, a 1/4 tank of gas, reduces the weight and ensures your vehicle doesn’t ride too low on the transport truck. In the event your vehicle weighs too much, the driver may not be able to take it.

– Make copies of your registration card and your insurance card and place them in the glove compartment. Do not leave the originals in the vehicle. You should always make sure that any original documentation stays with you.

– Next, remove all of your personal belongings. This includes, CDs, sunglasses, headphones, cables, cases, chargers, dash-mounted GPS. Anything that can be removed, should be. This also includes any suitcases or items you would like shipped to the destination. This also adds weight to the truck. The drivers do need to take breaks, and issues can arise, these issues can involve theft. Making sure all of your personal items are removed can deter the threat.

– When it comes to the keys to your vehicle, give the driver a spare set, while you keep the master set. Issues can happen and keys can get lost. The driver will need a set of keys to move the vehicles on and off the transport vehicle, so make sure to give them a set of keys, however, there is a risk of loss, theft or even accidentally locking the key in the car. Make sure to supply the driver with two keys, allowing the driver to keep one key safe during the move and one that will be used to move the car on and off the transport vehicle. All while making sure you keep the master set of keys.

– Make sure to review all of the documents from the shipper. Ensure the delivery address is correct, as well as your contact information. Be sure to get a copy of the Bill of Lading (BOL) at pick-up and delivery.

– Finally – be courteous. Truck drivers are busy and lose money while their truck is not moving. Be ready for pickup and be nice to the driver – we guarantee your vehicle will have a smoother ride.

Motor Car Trans Presents: Your “How-To” Guide for Car Shipping.

Car shipping can be a hassle. But here at Motor Car Trans, we’ve compiled a simple “how-to” guide to make shipping your car a breeze!

Today we are reviewing the first step on car shipping, how to find the right car shipping company for you.

First things first, you have to find a dependable car transport company, do your research.
The simple way of completing this: internet research. Go to Google and look up “vehicle transportation companies” or “car shipping companies” in your city or state. Simply look for their free quote form on their website and enter your information. You may receive multiple quotes in your email, by phone, or even by text. Don’t get stressed. This is how the shipping companies work for your business. Select the one that is right for you by doing your research. This means, reading past customer reviews, looking the company up on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website. Make sure there are no negative reviews and no pending complaints on the company.
Another thing to keep in mind when selecting a car transportation company, is that they are licensed and insured.

Once you’ve made a decision on a company, discuss the following options with your shipper:
The condition of your vehicle, (running or not running), while it may not seem like it, plays an integral role in the shipment of your car, as well as any aftermarket modifications, (i.e. larger wheels, lowered suspension, extended beds, high roof rack, etc). Making sure the shipper knows your vehicle has these issues/modifications upfront will prevent any headaches after the fact.

Another item to keep in mind is open or enclosed transport carriers. An open trailer auto transport vehicle is the most efficient way of transporting a car. Open trailers can transport up to ten cars at once, hence reducing the cost of shipping for you. Enclosed trailers are completely protected from the outside elements and are safer for your vehicle, as they are not exposed to the sun or any other elements that may cause damage to the paint or vehicle itself. Enclosed trailers are more expensive and are more commonly used to transport classic and expensive vehicles during the winter months when they may be exposed to harsher elements.

We hope this information help you get started on picking your car transportation company!

OPEN TRAILER AUTO TRANSPORTATION

Open trailer auto transport is the most efficient way of transporting a car.  Open trailers can transport up to ten cars at once, hence reducing the cost of shipping for the customer.  You have probably seen open trailer auto transporters on the highway.  Impressive, huh?  How do they stack so many cars onto that trailer is amazing.

Advantage of this type of shipping is that it is less expensive for the customer as the space on the trailer is shared by multiple vehicles.  This reduces the cost as it allows the transport company to transport multiple vehicles at one time.

Drawback of this type of shipping is that a large trailer truck like that cannot pick up individual cars from residential, or many commercial, locations.  Usually a single car hauler will pick up individual cars and bring them to a terminal where they will be loaded onto a trailer for long distance transport.  To reduce your cost of shipping, you can also arrange to deliver your vehicle to the terminal where it will be loaded onto a trailer.  Furthermore, you can pick up your vehicle from the destination terminal instead of having it delivered to your location.
